My office at NetCrafters is warm and I have a nice window that shows me the latest weather and the nature activity that surrounds this building. A cat saunters by every so often. Squirrels chatter, leaves fall, and every now and then a deer will show up. Other, more predictable action outside my window includes visits by the UPS and FedEx trucks and our mailman's daily visits. There is a church behind us that plays hymns at 9, 12, and 6 reminding me of the passing time as I sit at my desk day in and day out locked in engagement with phone, email, and clients.
As a mini-distraction I like knowing that people I care about are out there living life to the max. Former Cincinnatian Greg Meyer is out there having adventures and writing about them here.

Post staffers on WLW's Gary Burbank show today
Tomorrow is local radio personality Gary Burbank's last day live on WLW before he retires (re-runs will continue through the end of the year). When Cincinnati Post staffer Rick Bird interviewed Burbank for a story that appeared last week, Burbank offered to have a Post-themed "Sports or Consequences" as a tribute to the newspaper before it closes for good - after 126 years of service to the community - Dec. 31. Streetvibes editor and homeless advocate Jimmy Heath dies
It
is with a heavy heart that I share the sad news that former homeless
person turned homeless advocate and editor of Street Vibes, the
Cincinnati newspaper written by homeless people, Jimmy Heath died on Thursday after a fight with liver disease.
I am not exactly sure when I met Jimmy for the first time - I believe
it was about four years ago - but I know that he and his amazing
photographs left an indelible mark on my life. His story was a remarkable
one of overcoming incredible odds, going from rabid alcoholic who
wanted no more than to die in his sleep and thought drinking and
drinking would help achieve that to accomplished photographer who
showed his work around the globe.

A weekly CityBeat column
Starting with the Jan. 2 edition I will become a columnist at Cincinnati CityBeat.
The paper is undergoing a mild "refresh" that will include some neat
improvements to the layout, design, writing and coverage in the paper.
My column will appear in the "Voices" section of the paper and be in
every week.
I will be writing about news, issues, events, people, places and all
sorts of things about Cincinnati. I'm very much looking forward to it -
and, of course, working on making Cincy.com an outstanding Web site...

SuperTalk will be super country
Since Thursday morning, SuperTalk FM 96 5, where I have co-hosted "City Talk Radio" since March, has been playing construction noises in anticipation, reportedly, of a change in formats.
Well, this morning I have received confirmation that the station is going country and Western at noon today. That also means that "City Talk Radio" has been officially canceled.

Closing the Post and straying from storytelling
As mentioned in my questionably useful tribute to Twitter earlier today, I received a cell phone "tweet" this afternoon of a story by Joe Strupp about the Cincinnati Post's impending year end closing. The story is published at: editorandpublisher.com.
Among the interesting points in his story for me was this:
"There is life after journalism," Neikirk says, but admits, "I liked going to battle everyday in the newsroom." He says he has still not let himself think about the paper's eventual end: "It is bad, there have always been two voices in Cincinnati."
Whitehead, who spoke via cell phone while working her beat at a local police station, said she is glad to get out of news because the industry has strayed from storytelling into "quick, constant updating."
The part about straying from storytelling into "quick, constant updating" is a thought that strikes me as important.

depending on your interest in text messaging tools and toys, it may be

CityKin: Nutcracker moves to Aronoff
This is a little off topic for what I am doing in Iowa, but I have just learned from CityKin that the Cincinnati Ballet's annual Nutcracker performance has left Music Hall in Over-the-Rhine, where it has presumably been performed since its beginnings, and is now at the Aronoff Center in downtown.
A comment on the site indicates a "scheduling conflict" is being blamed for the change.

What’s next: Cincy.com (first from Iowa)
Never since high school have
more people asked me the same question over and over again. Back then
it was what I was going to do when I graduated, including what college
I planned to attend and what my major would be.
These days it has been what I would be doing after The Cincinnati Post closes Dec. 31.
Rounding third, resting in peace
Reports indicate that famous Reds broadcaster and the youngest person ever to play major league baseball, Joe Nuxhall, died last night - Thurs., Nov. 15, 2007 - just before 11 p.m. at Mercy Fairfield Hospital.
I have never been a big sports fan, but I certainly was a fan of Joe Nuxhall. He just always seemed like a friendly guy, including the time he rode by my home as the grand marshal of the 2005 Findlay Market Opening Day Parade. ...Read full post
Square dancing on the Square, new businesses open
I was very happy to see Graeter’s Ice Cream had opened. I grabbed a scoop of my favorite raspberry chocolate ice cream. As I was doing so I was told Saturday was their “soft opening,” leading into the grand opening this week (which means they will add pastries to the line-up). In light of my recent and continuing slim-down venture, this came with mixed feelings.
